Career Health Check

Few people work day to day in their ‘dream job’ or what they really believe they are ultimately called or were created to do.

In my article, Writing my Obituary, I wrote about the importance of seeking God for clarity about your life’s mission and calling. This is the first step. Gaining the big picture.

But how does your career fit into that?

When you know the big picture, your calling can be that internal compass to guide you towards the right direction. It’s what sheds light on all other aspects of your life…suddenly your spiritual, emotional, physical, relational arenas and career (current job) can take new meaning and purpose when you realize what you’re ultimately called to do and be.

If you feel stuck, unmotivated, not truly alive in your current career and job, it may be because you don’t know your ultimate calling and purpose or if you do, you don’t see how this current job could remotely be related to that bigger picture.

Financial Health Check

Finances are the grounds where a person’s true priorities, faithfulness, integrity, character, faith and heart can be revealed. It can also impact important relationships such as marriage and be the essential resources needed to make an impact beyond ourselves.

The Bible mentions money (silver, gold, etc) 735 times. Surprisingly, financial matters are mentioned more times in the Bible than the concepts of prayer, healing and mercy! Money is important to God. Actually it’s not really the money itself that is important to God, it’s what we do with it.

No doubt, finances are the arena where God can see our level of faithfulness, integrity, priorities (actions speak louder than words!), character in relations to others, our heart of generosity…

God wants to sees what we do when we do not have money and what we do when we do have money.

Relationship Health Check

“Life is relationships, the rest is just details.”    –Gary Smalley

“Our greatest joy and our greatest pain come in our relationships with others.”- Stephen R. Covey

We were not meant to do this life alone. We were created to be in healthy, supportive, life-giving relationships that challenge and encourage us to be everything God created us to be.

But these kind of high quality, inspirational and collaborative friendships and relationships take work. (A lot of work!) They are not a given or automatic. They are consciously created, divinely led and require much attention, nurturing and wisdom.

Physical Health Check

Many treat our cars better than we treat our bodies. What would it look like for us to nourish and value our bodies as stewards versus acting like owners?

I’m about to make a funny statement and here is goes. You are your body. Your body is you. Yes, we have spirit, soul and body but many of us in a way, separate our bodies from ourselves, when we abuse our bodies. We think it’s ok to eat junk all the time, not sleep enough and keep stressed…when in reality, if your body breaks down, you go down too.

Don’t think you can be successful without taking good care of your body!

Romans 12:1  “I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.” Clearly our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. God lives in us! He wants to do great things through you, will you keep your body in the best condition so you can accomplish all that he has for you?

In this article, I will continue to the 3rd arena of health as I outlined in the article How Healthy are you? and walk you through why physical health is paramount to your overall success, my personal journey in understanding the importance of health in my body and a few things I’ve learned that may be helpful for you!

Emotional Health Check

Many do not consider the impact of their past on their present and their future…until they have no choice but to face the reality of their wounds.

We live in a broken and fallen world and naturally, we encounter situations in our family and friendships that hurt. And hurt deeply. Sometimes we create mechanisms to cope, facades to hide behind, hobbies to obsess over, alternate identities and run to addictions to medicate and numb. Sometimes we vow we will never be like our dads or our moms or have the marriage they had. Sometimes we try to prove ourselves or unknowingly subscribe to belief systems and thinking patterns that are negative and self-defeating. Some of us have experienced deep rejection, neglect, pain or loss. More…

Spiritual Health Check

I Tim 4:8 “For physical training is of some value (useful for a little), but godliness (spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come.”

In my last blog post, I outlined the importance of pursuing health in every arena of your life and the impact on your ultimate success.  I will now deep dive into each arena– spiritual, emotional, physical, relational, financial and career/calling– and help you understand its importance, share more about my personal journey for health in that area and provide you some ‘best practices’ for things I’ve done to be faithful to shape up in each area.
